Edvotek Kit: VNTR Human DNA Typing Using PCR

In DNA fingerprinting, variable number tandem repeats (VNTR) are used to identify individuals. In this kit, students will type themselves at the D1S80 locus on chromosome 1. This region contains between 14 and 40 copies of a 16 base pair repeat.

• Horizontal gel electrophoresis apparatus, power supply, LED transilluminator.
• Thermal cycler
• Micropipettes (5-50ul)
• UV or Blue light transilluminator
• 2 x water baths
• Microcentrifuge
• Microwave or Hotplate

Some Components Require Freezer Storage Upon Receipt

Group Size: For 25 students

Time Required:

• Extraction - 30 minutes
• PCR Setup - 10 minutes
• PCR - 90 minutes
• Electrophoresis - 30 minutes
• Staining - 5 minutes
